Surah Kahf is the eighteenth surah of the Holy Book. It means “The Cave” and tells four key stories of worship, patience, humility, and trust in Allah SWT. Every verse of this chapter carries a message that is timeless and applicable to humans till the day of Judgement. However, this blog will focus on the last ten verses of this chapter and explore the message they convey.
The Last Ten Verses & Their Significance.
The last verses of Surah Kahf carry an important message about the Day of Judgment. These verses highlight the essentials of faith and serve as a reminder of the hereafter and its reward and punishment. They place an emphasis on preparing for life after death and always remembering to commit deeds that strengthen our relationship with Islam.
Verse 101-102: Warning Against Turning Away From Allah’s Guidance
“Those whose eyes were hoodwinked from My reminder and who could not bear to hear. Do the disbelievers reckon that they can choose My bondmen as protecting friends beside Me? Lo! We have prepared hell as a welcome for the disbelievers.”
These verses warn about what will happen to those who turn away from the truth on the day of judgment. Allah SWT highlights those who neglected the Quran and turned a blind eye, refusing to accept guidance. It also calls to all people who think they can take Allah’s servants as their gods (Jesus, the angels, etc.) instead of the one and only who is worthy of worship.
Verse 103-104: Futile Actions
“Say: Shall we inform you who will be the greatest losers by their works? Those whose efforts go astray in the life of the world, and yet they reckon that they do good work.”
Verse 103 of Surah Kahf asks a very weighted question, which verse 104 answers, highlighting a tragic scenario. These verses focus on those who think their deeds will be accepted, but in reality, they are mistaken, and their deeds are rejected. They did deeds that don’t count and are not acceptable to Allah SWT in the way they are.
These verses also serve as a reminder for Muslims to evaluate the actions they are doing and ensure they are aligned with the principles of Islam and are actually a preparation for the hereafter rather than just being for this world.
Verse 105: Deeds That Hold No Weight
“Those are they who disbelieve in the revelations of their Lord and in the meeting with Him. Therefore their works are vain, and on the Day of Resurrection, We assign no weight to them.”
This verse highlights the importance of belief in the hereafter and in the meeting with Allah SWT, which every human will go through. It underlines the idea that no matter how grand an action may be, if it is devoid of faith, it holds no weight. The people who denied the signs of Allah in the world and denied the akhirah have deeds that are empty.
Verse 106: The Consequence Of Disbelief & Mockery
“That is their reward: hell, because they disbelieved and made a jest of Our revelations and Our messengers.”
Mocking Allah’s revelations and his messengers is one of the gravest sins a person can commit. The one who makes fun of divine guidance is exposing themselves to the severe punishment of hell. This verse highlights that taking Allah’s signs and messengers as a joke is an action that has extreme consequences and that all knowledge about Islam should be approached with the utmost humility and reverence.
Verse 107-108: The Reward For The Righteous Believers
“Lo! Those who believe and do good works, theirs are the Gardens of Paradise for welcome, wherein they will abide, with no desire to be removed from thence.”
These verses highlight the beautiful reward of those who believed in Allah and His messengers. It states that these believers will have the pleasure of residing in Al-Firdaws, which is the highest place in Paradise. And this reward is everlasting. The believers will stay in this place for all of eternity, and they will never grow tired of it. These verses serve as reassurance in times of pain and difficulty and remind the Muslims of their true home.
Verse 109: The Magnificence of Allah
“Say: Though the sea became ink for the Words of my Lord, verily the sea would be used up before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even though we brought the like thereof to help.”
The wisdom and signs of Allah are full of such greatness that even if the whole sea were the ink for the pen, it would run dry before the words of Allah were written down. Because no one can outlast the words of Allah. No one can comprehend the greatness of the Lord.
Verse 110: Tawheed In Worship
“Say: I am only a mortal like you. My Lord inspires in me that your God is only One God. And whoever hopeth for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work, and make none sharer of the worship due unto his Lord.”
The last verse of this surah underlines one of the most fundamental principles in worship: Tawheed (oneness of Allah). It also highlights that whoever hopes for a good reward should commit deeds according to the laws Allah has prescribed.
