The Prophet Muhammad SAW is a blessing to the world. He was sent down by Allah SWT to guide mankind until the day of judgment. Just like his name sparks wonder in people’s minds today, there are many miracles he performed in his life, proving that he is indeed the prophet sent by Allah. This blog will take a deeper dive into all the miracles the Prophet PBUH performed and the reasons behind them.
Miracles & The Prophet PBUH
The miracles of the Prophet PBUH are said to be in the sense that he performed them by Allah’s will.
The Quran
“Say: Verily, though mankind and the jinn should assemble to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like thereof though they were helpers one of another.”
One of the greatest miracles of the Prophet PBUH is the revelation of the Quran during his prophethood. The preservation of the Holy Quran is proof of Allah’s supreme authority. The divine miracle of the Holy Quran can be demonstrated from various angles, including its historical accuracy, linguistic excellence, and the numerous prophecies it correctly predicted.
The Splitting Of The Moon
“The hour drew nigh, and the moon was split in two. And if they behold a portent, they turn away and say, Prolonged illusion.”
Narrated Abdullah: While we were with the Prophet (PBUH) in Mina, the moon was split into two parts. He then said, “Be witnesses.” Afterwards, one part of the moon moved toward the mountain.
One of the greatest and most profound miracles performed by the Prophet PBUH. Performing something a human can never do, he solidified his position as God’s final Prophet. This miracle left everyone who questioned his prophethood speechless. The miracle of the split moon occurred before the migration to Madinah.
The disbelievers demanded Prophet PBUH give them proof that supported his claim. Subsequently, the moon was split in two, with one half over one mountain on the east side, and the other half over the mountain on the west side. This incident took place on a moonlit night, and the Prophet PBUH said to the people who were present, ‘Be witnesses.’ However, upon seeing this miracle, they dismissed it as magic and claimed that the Prophet (PBUH) had cast a spell upon them.
They further said, ‘although he had bewitched us, he can’t bewitch the entire world. So we will wait for the people from the neighboring areas and hear what they say.’ When the people from the surrounding areas were asked, they replied in the affirmative and confirmed that they saw the moon split into two parts. This miracle is proven in great detail in the tafsir of Surah Al-Qamar, verse 1, and is also stated in various hadiths.
The Night Journey
“Glorified be He Who carried His servant by night from the Inviolable Place of Worship to the Far Distant Place of Worship, the neighborhood whereof We have blessed, that We might show him of Our tokens! Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer.”
The night journey, also known as Al-Isra Wal Miraj or the journey to heaven. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was carried from Al-Masjid al-Haram to Al-Masjid al-Aqsa, and from there he ascended to the heavens. This journey took place when the Prophet PBUH was in a state of extreme hardship; he had just lost his beloved wife, Khadija RA, and his uncle, Abu Talib. The Quraysh were acting with the utmost hostility, and when he went to Taif to spread the message of Islam, they also rejected him in the cruelest way possible by throwing stones at him.
This journey occurred on the 27th of Rajab, and the Prophet PBUH visited all seven skies. He made many incredible stops along the way, which happened in a small portion of the night, which is not humanly possible because of the distance. And as he was transported back to his house, he saw multiple caravans travelling to Makkah, which he later described to the Quraysh as concrete proof of this journey.
The Crying Tree
Jabir bin `Abdullah narrated that an Ansari woman asked the Prophet (PBUH), “O Allah’s Messenger! May I make a seat for you? I have a carpenter who is a slave.” He replied, “If you wish.” So she had a pulpit constructed for him. One Friday, the Prophet (PBUH) sat on that pulpit. Meanwhile, a date-palm stem near the place where he used to deliver sermons cried out so loudly that it seemed it might burst. The Prophet (PBUH) stepped down from the pulpit and embraced the stem, which then groaned like a child being comforted and eventually stopped crying. The Prophet (PBUH) explained, “It cried because it misses hearing the knowledge of religion.”
When Masjid e Nabwi was first built, its pillars were of date branches, and there was no mimbar. But since the Prophet PBUH used to deliver sermons and there was no mimbar, he used to lean against a palm tree. Some days later, a mimbar was made for him. Now, instead of leaning against the palm tree, he used the mimbar. Suddenly, everybody in the mosque heard a weeping noise from the palm tree the Prophet PBUH used to lean against. Hearing this, he went to the tree and comforted it, informing the people that the reason for its crying was that it missed hearing about Islam.
The Miracle Of Food
The Prophet PBUH married and consummated his marriage with Zaynab bint Jahsh. On this occasion, the mother of Anas RA prepared a dish of hais (a sweet dish made of barley flour and dates) and he took it to the Prophet PBUH, saying that ‘My mother sends you Salam and says to you that this hais is a small part from us.’ The Prophet PBUH told Anas RA to put it down, and then he told Anas RA to call some people, and whoever he met, he mentioned some men. So, Anas RA called all the names he mentioned and also those he met.
After this, Al-Ja’d bin Abi ‘Uthman asked Anas RA, “How many were they?” He replied, “About three hundred.” The Prophet then said: ‘Let them sit around the dish in groups of ten, one after another, and each person should eat from the part nearest to him.’ They ate until they were satisfied, then one group left and another group came in. Afterwards, he told me: ‘O Anas, clear everything away.’ I cleared it up, and I don’t know whether there was more food when I cleared it away or when I initially placed it down.”
The Miracle Of Water
On the day of Al-Hudaibiya, the people became very thirsty. They took this matter to the Prophet PBUH, and when he asked about the problem, they replied that they had no water for drinking or ablution except the water placed in front of him in a small pot. Hearing this, the Prophet PBUH placed his hands in the pot, and like springs, the water started to flow from his fingers.
Narrated Salim bin Abi Aj-Jad: Jabir bin `Abdullah said, “On the day of Al-Hudaibiya (Treaty), the people became extremely thirsty. There was a small container of water in front of the Prophet (PBUH), and after he finished his ablution, the crowd hurried towards him. He asked, ‘What is wrong with you?’ They explained, ‘We have no water left for either ablution or drinking, except what is in front of you.’ The Prophet then placed his hand into the container, and the water started flowing between his fingers like springs. We all drank and performed our ablutions from it.” I asked Jabir, “How many of us were there?” He replied, “Even if we had been a hundred thousand, it would have been enough for us, but we were only fifteen hundred.”
