Why is Islamic Prostration Important in Islam?

“When the revelations of the Beneficent were recited unto them, they fell down, adoring and weeping.” [Surah Maryam, Verse 58]

“…But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).”

[Surah Alaq, Verse 19]

Prostration in Islam is considered an extremely important aspect of a Muslim’s life. It is seen as a sign of humility and submission to Allah. Prostration is mentioned numerous times in the Quran and Hadiths. Apart from this, there is a whole chapter in the Quran named Surah As-Sajda.

The word sajda (prostration) is derived from the Arabic root letters s-j-d, which have the general meaning of ‘to submit’. The word ‘sajdah’ specifically refers to the act of bowing during Islamic prayer, where a Muslim touches his forehead, knees, and forearms to the ground.

Significance of Islamic Prostration

The sajdah is a core part of a Muslim’s belief because a Muslim can only prostrate before Allah. Not only does this act symbolize the faith of a Muslim, but it also portrays the greatness of our Lord.

“Lo! Those who are with thy Lord are not too proud to do Him service, they glorify Him. And to Him they prostrate.” [Surah Al-Araf, Verse 206]

This verse proves that not only humans but also angels glorify the Lord by prostrating to him. Prostration symbolizes humility and humbling oneself spiritually. The forehead touches the ground, connecting the body with Allah’s universe, while the soul connects with the Almighty Himself. Not only does this center the spirit, but it also helps a person become closer to his creator.

Spiritual Benefits Of Islamic Prostration

Highest Degree Of Worship

Thauban (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah say, “Increase your prayers. For every prostration you make before Allah, your rank will be elevated by one degree, and one of your sins will be forgiven.” [Riyad as-Salihin 107]

Imam Jafar emphasizes that prostration is the highest form of worship, symbolizing complete surrender to God. In this humble act, Muslims experience a profound peace of mind and soul, knowing they are under the care of a magnificent power that controls the universe. This connection instills calmness and reassurance, allowing worshippers to find solace amidst life’s challenges.

Humility

Whenever one is in prostration, they are in their most humble state. And with this humbleness comes great humility, which cleanses the heart and soul of a believer and reminds them that no matter what happens in one’s life, they should always remain as humble as possible.

Closeness To Allah

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah said, “The slave is closest to his Lord when he is in prostration, so make abundant supplications during this time.” [Riyad as-Salihin 1428]

Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib is reported to have said that nothing can foster closeness to Allah like engaging in frequent prostration and bowing. Prostration provides a direct connection with the Lord by focusing one’s attention inward. The connection between the Muslim and the Lord is deep when one is in prostration.

Forgiveness Of Sins

Not only does prostration bring one closer to Allah, but it also helps to wipe out sins. The forgiveness of sins emphasizes how merciful Allah is and how many chances he has given to ask for forgiveness.

Zaid b. Khalid al-Juhani reported that the Messenger of Allah said, “If anyone performs two prostrations sincerely and without negligence, Allah will forgive his previous sins.”

Medical Benefits Of Islamic Prostration

Muscle Movement

Whenever one goes into the position of prostration, they use their whole body. When they bring their forehead to the ground and place their arms against their heads, they are actively using all muscles in their body. This muscle movement allows gentle exercise and improves the mobility of the upper body.

Blood Flow

When one is normally standing or sitting, the brain is above the heart, which means that the heart has to work against gravity to send blood to the brain. But when one is in the position of sajdah, the brain is below the heart, which allows for ample blood flow to the brain. This results in better memory, hearing, etc., and makes the mind less prone to cognitive function disorders.

Neck Muscles Become Stronger

The neck muscles are some of the most important muscles inside a human body. They support the weight of the forehead, and when one’s forehead touches the ground, these muscles are stretched and strengthened due to the position. Stronger cervical muscles ensure protected cervical vertebrae, which is essential for supporting the head.
